The Five Peaks of Mission Trails: The Story Behind Our Name
Our name comes from the Five Peaks of Mission Trails visible from our mats. Here is how five peaks mirror the five belts — and the lesson it teaches every student.

If you have visited our academy in Tierrasanta, you may have noticed the ridgeline visible from our mats. That is the Five Peaks of Mission Trails — and it is where Five Peaks Jiu Jitsu gets its name. The story behind the name says a lot about how we think about training, progress, and community in San Diego.
Five Peaks, Five Belts
The Five Peaks of Mission Trails stand for the five belt levels in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: White, Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black. Each peak is a stage of the journey. From the base, the summit can look impossibly far away — exactly how a brand-new white belt feels about the road to black belt.
- White belt — the first peak, where everyone begins
- Blue belt — building real fundamentals
- Purple belt — refining your own game
- Brown belt — sharpening and teaching
- Black belt — the summit, and the start of a new climb
One Step at a Time
The journey to black belt is a seemingly impossible task, but like ascending the peaks, it is attainable when taken one step at a time. That idea is the heart of how we coach at Five Peaks. We do not rush students to the top. We help you take the next right step — the next technique, the next class, the next small win — until the summit is behind you.
“The journey to black belt can feel impossible, but like ascending the peaks, it is attainable when taken one step at a time.”
Rooted in the Tierrasanta Community
We chose the name to connect with our local community near Mission Trails Regional Park rather than promote any one person. The Five Peaks are part of daily life here in Tierrasanta — hikers take on the 5-Peak Challenge, families walk the trails, and the ridgeline frames the sky above our academy. Our name ties the discipline of jiu jitsu to the place where we train.
From an Empty Room in 2019
Five Peaks opened in the fall of 2019 to an empty room. Coaches Carlos and Mark — both black belts — offered free trials to attract their first students and built the academy from zero. When the pandemic hit in early 2020, they pivoted to outdoor classes at a local park, a season that forged deep relationships with the students who stayed. Today, the academy is a family-focused community serving Tierrasanta and the surrounding San Diego neighborhoods.
